Mom as Teacher

You know, as a new Mom, you were your child's first teacher. I know some of you probably had your baby on a schedule, but many of you let the baby decide when they wanted to eat, how much and what they want to eat (to a certain extent). You allowed your child to walk when they were ready, and were content if they just crawled for a few minutes at first, then half an hour, then you ran across the living room as they were about to pull down something from the table. In all of this, you were a Mom.

It's no different in teaching your child to read or do math. You let them work on it at their pace, some days they will want to go over it again and again, others, they won't want to even discuss any type of *school*.

You know, formal education has only been around for 150 years. For millenniums before that, people taught their children as they worked the field, worked in their homes, worked in their shops just below their homes. Children learned by being with the adults in their lives.

Rest of the Story

List of the Month
Texas Home Educators

The Texas Home Educators is a list to serve the Home Educators of Texas in discussions of homeschool styles, philosophy, books, curriculum, events, and laws in a Christian atmosphere. As we homeschool our children, or unschool our children, this is the place to discuss and share our triumphs, our questions, and our bumps. Although discussions will sometimes stray from the direct purpose of home schooling, it usually does not stray from our children's interests. TexHmEd has been serving the community since August 21,
1998 and is now the largest statewide homeschool list.

I'm so busy

Howdy! We hope you will find this website beneficial to your search for information about homeschooling in general and homeschooling in Texas in particular.  Texas Home Educators are friendly, diverse and independent, just like all Texians.

There are almost 400,000 children homeschooling in Texas, and as you learn about the community, you will find they are bright children pursuing their individual interests and their talents while finding their individual learning styles through home education.

If you don't find your question answered on this website, you can always join the online discussion groups where hundreds of homeschoolers online can answer your question.
