Thanksgiving Blessings

We hope this finds you with family and home wherever home might be. We are taking a break, enjoying family and home.  We had a FEMA trailer as home one Thanksgiving and have traveled through bad weather across Texas to get to Grandmother’s house in years past. Each year our Thanksgiving is a bit different, however we always stop to give thanks for whatever circumstance we find ourselves.

Stopping to Count your Blessings is not just a tradition, it’s a universal law of prosperity. Being grateful to God for every good thing, for every good gift comes from the Father above, is something that should be exercised daily. It helps you stay focused on the good instead of leaving a hole in your heart for the missing, a hole that would otherwise be filled with greed, such as we witnessed with the folks fighting at the sales.

Life is more than stuff, it’s about family and love. We hope this finds you with a plethora of both.

New Website + New Blog = Soft Launch

We have the beta of the new blog up and running.  We uploaded our blogger blog onto this one, but had trouble with the homeschool blogger.  Apparently they erased all the Homeschool Nation state blogs, and of course we were doing the one for Texas.  So we are adding those in one at a time thanks to the Way Back Machine.

The new website is also in beta.  We uploaded all the pages, so if you have a link to the page directly it should work.  Just reload the page to see the new one.  We are learning yet another software as we prepare the java menu with layers.  Since we have almost 250 pages, we thought you’d appreciate NOT having 250 links on the side. :-)

So we are here to serve you.  We are updating the support group page, adding a Tutor Directory, and expanding out articles and lesson plans.

Also, we want videos made by YOUR KIDS, yes, if your homeschool kids are budding movie producers, we would  love to help let the world know about their talent.

So what are your homeschool questions?  Have you hit any walls that you need help with?  Let us know and we will find the answer!

Connections Academy

Hi, this is a post to help homeschool parents make an informed decision regarding the Connections Academy This is a virtual school that was started by the Houston Independent School District.  It has obtained a new charter and permitted to expand to the entire state of Texas.  But it is still a public school!

You will be required to take the state normed tests, and provide shot records.  You may receive free items for study.  But you will be considered to be a public schooler at home, not a homeschooler, in the purest sense.  Also, if you are an HSLDA member, you will no longer qualify for that membership, as they require that at least half of the child’s instruction be accomplished in the home with the parent.

I know that some folks will flinch with that opinion.  However, I want you to be informed.  I understand if you need to do this because of finances.  However, having known families who have continued to homeschool through extreme financial challenges, I would have you ask yourself if the decision is one of convenience or of conviction.

So when you see this *academy* discussed on boards and lists, please say to yourself, this is a public school academy.

IMmodesty is a conspiracy!

From time to time the homeschool social media lists will break out in questions about modest clothing for young girls and sometimes for the Moms. Then everyone will send their favorite modest clothing site and the groups calm down again.

However, while traveling last week I had forgotten my slip, just a little half slip, but something that made a big difference in my favorite dress I was going to wear to an important dinner event. Well, I went to Walmart to gather some last minute items, knowing I could pick up a half slip there and save time. Not!

Called KOHLS, they had slips, but not in my size. Went to Target, same thing. Finally I hit the women’s stores of Lane Bryan, Dress Barn, and Avenue, NADA. One lady said that only Sears and JCPenney had slips anymore. Nope. Called both and JC said they only had slips in the catalog.

So after NOT wearing my favorite dress to the event, I came to the conclusion that being immodest, showing more than you really want to, is a conspiracy among the store buyers. Instead of buying one good blouse for $30, we have to buy 3 blouses for $20 each because they are so thin you need to *layer* your clothing. Back when I was a kid, the first layer was called underclothing, for a reason!!

So if you are in need of underclothing, be sure and order it ahead of time. It won’t be in the stores.
