Two of nature's most spectacular forces produced an incredible brew in the
skies of Chile as a volcanic eruption met a lightning storm. Tons of dust
and ash from the eruption of the Chatin volcano poured into the night sky
just as an electric storm passed overhead. The resulting collision created
a spectacular sight as lightning flickered around the dust cloud amid the
orange glow of the volcano.
The eruption was all the more spectacular because the Chatin volcano, 800
miles (1,290km)south of Santiago ,has been dormant for hundreds - if not
thousands - of years. The Patagonian volcano began erupting on Friday and
the 12-mile-high plume has left vast tracts of land coated with a layer of
ash.

Matthew Thompson did a science fair project on
volcano's and Mt. Vesuvius. I told him he had to do
both a history and science fair and he beat me by doing both in one. He studied
various active
volcanoes and had a section on those on his board, He had info about volcano's
themselves, his
favorite part was the pyroclastic cloud. He made a volcano that of course
erupted and had all pictures
of Vesuvius on the other side of his board. It was the first time he had done a
project at all. He
decided where everything went on the board and helped me put the whole thing
together. He has ever
since been fascinated with volcano's and we often check on active volcano's to
see what they are
doing!
